NEW CEO FOR AMA TASMANIA ANNOUNCED

President of the AMA Dr John Davis announced today that the new CEO of the AMA in Tasmania will be Ms Lara Giddings.

Former Premier and Health Minister Lara will take over in early March from long-time advocate Mr Tony Steven, who has been with the AMA for ten years. Dr Davis said, “We are very pleased to bring Lara on to the team, and we look forward to continuing to build on the good work the association has done in representing our members and improving health outcomes for Tasmanian's”.

Ms Giddings said with her experience as a former health minister; she was excited to join the AMA Tasmania team.

“As Health Minister I loved working with the health sector, and I was proud to work with doctors to help drive reform to our health system through the Tasmania Health Plan. “In this new role, I look forward to working with doctors to provide constructive advice to the government on how to improve our health system as well as provide support to doctors in their everyday working lives.

“There are many issues confronting our health system across the preventative, primary and acute sectors as demand for services increases.

“Doctors need to be at the forefront of the debate on how best to care for patients and address the pressures facing our GP’s and hospital-based doctors and specialists, including those in training.” Ms Giddings takes on the role once occupied by the first CEO of AMA Tasmania and former Premier and Health Minister the Honourable Doug Lowe.
